5 Tips for Ordering Custom Furniture

Your everyday life at home is built around your furniture. It’s the deep conversations and laughs that happen at the dining table, to the bookshelves that house your favorite objects and memories. The secret to curating a beautiful home that truly feels like your home, is furnishing it with timeless staples that are both meaningful and functional.

We know first-hand how frustrating and time consuming shopping for the right pieces of furniture for your home can be. More often than not, ready-ship pieces from big name furniture brands will lead to compromises on either quality or design (or both).

If you’re looking for furniture that truly reflects your personal taste, and is perfectly suited to your lifestyle and the layout of your home, ordering custom furniture is the way to go. The thought of starting a design from scratch might sound intimidating, but we’re here to make the process of ordering custom furniture seamless and easy. At Casa Dega Design, our pieces are made with love and an attention to detail we guarantee you won’t find anywhere else.

Our top 5 tips on how to start ordering custom furniture

  1. Create a Visual

Start by creating a mood board of your design plans for the living space where your custom furniture will be displayed. We love using sites like Pinterest to curate big picture inspiration, then apps like Canva or Photoshop to create a detailed room rendering. A lot of our clients will also send us a rough, hand-drawn or digital sketch of their idea for their dining table, media console, bed frame, etc.

*If you want to make the conception phase even easier, hand it over to a professional. We have collaborated with some fantastic interior designers across the country and would be happy to connect you.

2. Shop Our Portfolio

A majority of our clients discover our work through past commissions featured in our portfolio and will reach out because they’re looking for something similar. If you haven’t already, take some time to browse these projects on our website. You can include links or screenshots of any of our designs to use as a starting point, then combine special details from any of them to make it uniquely your own.

Once we have a good feel for your vision, we can recommend wood tones that complement your space or even more ideas for detailing. You’re only limited by your own imagination when working with us.

3. Choose Your Materials

All of our custom furniture is made from solid hardwood, sanded and finished to bring out the natural beauty of the wood grain. Because wood is a natural, organic material, keep in mind that none of our pieces will ever look exactly identical to each other.

Some of our most popular materials are white oak and walnut. They are complete opposites in terms of color and grain texture (and can also widely vary in price).

Once you’ve created your mood board from step one, you’ll start to notice what wood tones and styles you’re naturally drawn to already. We are also happy to ship wood grain samples to your home if you’re having trouble deciding.

4. Include Measurements

Be sure to include specific details, like the overall dimensions of the room and your desired length/width/height of the custom furniture that you’re ordering.

For example, with custom dining tables, it’s important for us to know how many people you’d like to seat comfortably, while also respecting the limitations of your space. You’ll need enough room to walk around the table and slide out the chair to take a seat.

If you’re in a small space but love to host parties, you might consider a drop leaf table or an extendable dining table. And if you have other pieces you’d like to build around, like specific chairs or an area rug, send us those dimensions too.

5. Trust the Process

When ordering custom furniture, the saying, “good things come to those who wait,” certainly applies here. Every piece we make is a true labor of love, because we love what we do. Our custom furniture may have longer lead times than the big brand stores out there, but our clients will vouch for us- our made-to-order furniture is seriously worth the wait.

We want custom furniture to feel accessible to everyone- so what are you waiting for? Reach out today for a tailored quote on your dream piece and let’s build it together.
